Since its inception in 1996, The Webby Awards' unwavering mission has been to honor excellence. The annual Webby Awards serves as a snapshot in time of the state of the Internet, the industry, and the world.
In 1996, The Webby Awards was born as part of The Web, a magazine from tech publisher IDG. Using $30,000 and in-kind donations from 11 companies to produce the first Webby Awards, the awards were launched with 15 categories. The Webby Winners were selected by an array of Internet aficionados, a group which would become the basis for the International Academy of the Digital Arts and Sciences. In 1998, IDG closed The Web but allowed the Webby team to carry on The Webby Awards because of its overwhelming success.
The success of The Webby Award parallels the rise of the Internet. From humble beginnings, The Webby Awards has evolved in to the undisputed premier honor for Websites, Online Film & Video, Interactive Advertising & Media, Mobile Sites & Apps and Social. Today, the web has emerged as a critical tool of business and daily life and an established media vehicle, with The Webby Awards serving as the most important award honoring achievement in interactive media.
The original team behind The Webby Awards still guides the awards today. Each year brings new challenges and growth. The 18th Annual Webby Awards features over 100 categories , five different entry media-types, an unprecedented quality of judges, and great marketing and strategic partners like Dell, Microsoft, Leica and Vitamin T. As always, The Webby is pointing to the future - our goal is to make the next 18 years as remarkable as the first.
